Hyaluronic acid is a type of sugar, a glucosaminoglycan, which is naturally present in the body along with collagen and elastin. Hyaluronic acid has an amazing property: with its strong moisturizing action, it achieves a better bonding of collagen and elastin fibres. The result is a firm, radiant and youthful skin.

Over time, the amount of hyaluronic acid in the skin decreases, resulting in the formation of lines and wrinkles and a reduction in volume in the temples and cheekbones, giving the face a tired and sad expression.

That’s where synthetic hyaluronic acid comes in, replenishing the normal loss and playing exactly the same role as nature has given it: strengthening the skin’s structure, keeping it hydrated and elastic and giving it a youthful and radiant appearance.

The treatment step by step

1st step

During your visit, you discuss with a qualified dermatologist or plastic surgeon, who listens carefully to your wishes and determines your facial needs.

Your age, the quality and condition of your skin and your expectations all play a role in the doctor’s creation of a treatment plan exclusively for you so that after the application of hyaluronic acid you will have the result that suits you and that you desire.

As part of the discussion, the doctor asks if you have had similar treatment before, for the type and the places you have had injectable treatments.

2nd step

The nurse thoroughly cleans your skin and applies anaesthetic cream to the hyaluronic injection areas to make the procedure painless.

At this stage you need to wait for about 15-20 minutes for the cream to take effect.

Then, the nurse cleans the face of the cream and the doctor marks the injection sites with a pencil.

3rd step

The application of hyaluronic acid filler is done either with a special very fine needle provided in the sterile package of hyaluronic acid filler or with a very fine cannula that does not injure the tissues. The method chosen for the injection depends on the facial area.

During the application, the doctor gently massages the injection sites to spread the material evenly over the area. The duration of the treatment varies depending on where the fillers will be inserted and the amount needed, but usually does not exceed 30 minutes.

The result is immediately visible, although it takes a few days to take its final shape. You are ready to enjoy the best version of your face!

Useful tips

Before treatment

If you are taking medication for blood thinning, stop taking it for a few days – always with the agreement of your doctor. Similarly, some supplements such as vitamin E, omega-3 fatty acids, gingo biloba and ginseng and alcohol have vasodilator properties, which means that small bruises will be more likely to appear at the injection sites, so it is also helpful to stop taking them a few days before.

After treatment

After treatment, it is possible that small bruising and/or mild swelling may occur at the injection site. They will subside quickly but it is best to avoid treatment in the days before an important and special outing or occasion.

Apply topical ice and arnica cream which helps them to subside more quickly.

However, immediately after the treatment there is a slight possibility of local sensitivity, ecchymosis, erythema and swelling which gradually subside over the next hours or days with the help of gentle massage.

Immediately after the application of hyaluronic acid the result is usually already visible. But because it is not the final one, the patient should pay attention to the following instructions:

Mild massage at regular intervals in the next 48 hours.
Application of ice locally during the first few hours optionally.
Avoiding the use of hot water.
Touching the area only with clean hands.
Avoid heavy make-up for 24 hours and use hyaluronic acid moisturizer.

When the effect of hyaluronic acid before and after is not satisfactory, we can remove it with its antidote which is hyaluronidase. Hyaluronidase is an enzyme (protein) that destroys hyaluronic acid and has been used for years in medicine as a means to help absorb some drugs.

It is a substance that if injected at the site of hyaluronic acid dissolves it immediately in just a few minutes. Hyaluronidase is safe and only affects synthetic hyaluronic acid and not the one that is naturally present in our body.

Injectable hyaluronic acid is not a cheap material, as the conditions and the way it is prepared in the laboratory are such that it perfectly simulates the natural molecule.
