What is Finasteride?

Finasteride is a hair medication to treat hair loss. Finasteride has excellent results in reducing hair loss and enhancing hair growth and strengthening. A large number of clinical studies have shown that treatment with finasteride increases the number of hairs and hair diameter in people with androgenetic alopecia, the most common form of hair loss.

Treatment with finasteride

How does it work?

Finasteride inhibits the action of the enzyme 5-a-reductase and thereby stops the conversion of testosterone into another hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is responsible for the degeneration of hair follicles and thus the occurrence of male pattern hair loss.

By reducing the amount of DHT, finasteride helps to stop and in some cases reverse hair loss.

Finasteride stimulates hair growth only in the scalp and does not cause hair growth in other parts of the body.

How finasteride works in women

Finasteride is prohibited in women during pregnancy or breastfeeding, as it may harm the foetus or newborn and, due to its effect on DHT, cause problems (teratogenesis) in the development of the foetus.

The use of finasteride is allowed in women after menopause. A 2020 clinical study finds that use of finasteride in women with androgenetic alopecia leads to an 81.7% increase in hair diameter and a 68.9% improvement in hair density.

The benefits of finasteride in hair loss

Finasteride is a drug that has been proven effective in treating hair loss. In the majority of men, daily intake of finasteride for 3 – 6 months is required for the first visible results to appear. A scientific study finds that taking finasteride, after five years of treatment, leads to the cessation of hair loss in up to 90% of men.

Here are some of the hair benefits of finasteride, based on clinical studies in a large sample of patients published in reputable international medical journals

Slows down hair loss: Finasteride has been shown to slow the progression of androgenetic alopecia in men. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, researchers found that 83% of men treated with finasteride maintained or increased their hair count over two years.

It promotes hair growth: In addition to slowing hair loss, finasteride has also been shown to promote new hair growth. A five-year study found that men who were treated with finasteride in 90% increased their hair count.

Long-term benefits: Another five-year follow-up study confirms that men treated with finasteride maintain or increase their hair count and do not experience hair loss progression over a long period.
