What type of treatment is dutasteride?

Dutasteride’s action

Dutasteride is an effective treatment for hair loss that inhibits the action of the 5-alpha-reductase. This enzyme converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), an androgenic hormone associated with male sexual characteristics and hair thinning in genetically predisposed individuals. Androgenetic alopecia occurs when the hair follicles in the hairline and crown/crown areas undergo shrinkage, leading to receding hairline and expanding alopecia. By reducing DHT production by more than 90%, dutasteride helps prevent, delay, and reverse hair loss in people with androgenetic alopecia.

Dutasteride Vs. Finasteride

Both dutasteride (dutasteride) and finasteride are effective in treating hair loss, but several clinical studies [1] [2] [3] have shown that dutasteride is slightly more effective. As an example, we cite a 2014 study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology [4], which compared the two drugs in 917 men aged between 20 and 50 years with different stages of androgenetic alopecia. The findings revealed that men using dutasteride had thicker hair and a higher average number of hairs compared to those using finasteride.

Dutasteride’s advantages: Dutasteride shows slightly higher efficacy than finasteride due to its ability to inhibit type 1 and type 2, 5-alpha reductase enzymes, whereas finasteride selectively inhibits only the type 2 enzyme. By targeting both types of enzymes, dutasteride achieves a more significant reduction in DHT production, about 90% compared to the 70% reduction of finasteride. Another factor contributing to the superiority of dutasteride is that it remains in the body for a longer period after administration.

Dutasteride is extremely effective against hair loss.

Combining Treatments

Dutasteride can be used in combination with other hair loss treatments, such as minoxidil (topical or oral), autologous PRP hair mesotherapy, and hair transplantation. The combination of treatments can provide synergistic benefits and improve overall results. Especially in the case of hair transplantation, dutasteride can help preserve existing hair and enhance the growth and longevity of new hair.

However, depending on an individual’s medical history and needs, combination treatments are not always necessary nor are they suitable for everyone. It is important to consult with a medical professional who will determine the most appropriate combination based on your necessity, effectiveness, and safety.
