Scars and acne scars are the result of an inflammation on the surface of the skin. As cystic acne cysts grow, there is a risk of rupturing their wall. If this rupture occurs close to the surface of the skin then the damage caused is mild. However, if they rupture deeply in their wall, then their contents are expelled and the healthy skin tissue is destroyed. Our body, in order to cope with the damage and heal the wound, produces collagen and connective tissue leading to small or large scars.
The use of the CO2 Fractional Laser in the treatment of scars caused by acne is particularly successful. The duration and repeatability of the sessions depend on the extent of the problem and should be done every 3-4 weeks or so. Facial redness may last for a few hours and the use of sunscreen is considered necessary.
