Plastic surgery is the medical specialty dedicated to repairing congenital defects or acquired deformities of the face and body caused by trauma, inflammation or excision of malignant neoplasms.
Plastic Surgery has two branches: Reconstructive Surgery and Aesthetic/Cosmetic Surgery. Plastic Surgery was named after the Greek word “πλάθω” (platho) which means to mold or to give shape. It enables us to improve, change and reform the human face and body.
The first efforts for restoring body deformities were first mentioned in antiquity. The origins of plastic surgery date back to ancient India (800-700 BC), when the Hindu physician Sushruta is mentioned to have performed nose and lip reconstruction. During the first century AD, the Roman scholar Celsus described various reconstructing techniques for eyelids, lips and noses, while in 131–201 AD, Galenus described his own reconstructing techniques focusing on face and neck. Other notable physicians who also performed plastic surgeries appeared during the Renaissance, such as Branca and Alexander Benedictus and later Gaspare Tagliacozzi, who wrote the first textbook on plastic surgery.
In Germany, von Graefe introduced the Indian method of plastic surgery. It was the one who used the term “plastic” for the first time, which derives from the Greek verb “πλάθω”, to show his personal changes in the technique. However, the term “plastic surgery” was first used by Edward Zeiss in 1938 in his book «Handbuch der plastischen Chirurgie». The first plastic skin graft procedure is attributed to Baronio in 1804, but it was Reverdin who made the skin graft method popular.
The First World War offered the material that helped plastic surgery to be developed and established as an independent specialty with many disciplines. Davis and Blair from the USA and Gillies from Great Britain used their experience on war injuries and contributed in the development of modern plastic surgery. Plastic surgery was further developed after World War II, whereupon it was extended to two major fields: Craniofacial surgery, whose architect was Paul Tessier, and Reconstructive Microsurgery, whose architects were Buncke, O’Brien and Harii.
In Greece, Plastic Surgery was acknowledged as a separate specialty in 1954. In 1969 the Hellenic Society for Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery was founded
In practice, Reconstructive Surgery addresses deformities resulting from injuries, scars and burns caused by the increasing car accidents, and from malignancies, using either traditional surgical methods or microsurgical methods. In fact, the role of Reconstructive Surgery is to restore the human body to the form it had before the accident or tumor.

The cost for the procedures that are performed under local anesthesia is low. On the contrary, the cost for plastic surgery requiring general anesthesia and hospitalization or special units is higher.
The price for a plastic surgery also depends on the special expertise required from the plastic surgeon, the degree of difficulty, the duration and the number of persons needed in the support team.
The cost of a plastic surgery should in no case be the main criterion for selecting a plastic surgeon. The price for a plastic surgery procedure and the cost of plastic surgery in general should also take into account the experience of the plastic surgeon, his expertise and the existence of an organized clinic or surgery to safely perform the procedure.
