Otoplasty

Protruding ears or “bat ears” is a very common condition that adversely affects the appearance and psychology of people suffering from this deformity. In deed, the ears are an important aesthetic unit of the head, defining its lateral boundaries. The aim of Otoplasty is to correct “floppy ears”, as well as any congenital or acquired ear abnormality.

Surgical Procedure

Otoplasty is relatively painless and the results are permanent. The patient can return home the same day after surgery. The aesthetic results of Otoplasty are excellent, significantly improving the appearance and boosting the person’s self-confidence and psychology. In children, Otoplasty is performed under general anesthesia, while adults can undergo this procedure under local anesthesia. In the specially designed areas of our clinic, Otoplasty is performed under local anesthesia in most cases, which makes the procedure safe and the patient can immediately return home.

Protruding ears, commonly known as floppy ears, appear early as early as infancy. It is recommended that children with naked ears should be corrected before the start of school, around the age of 6 years, in order to avoid unpleasant effects on the children’s psychology. At this age the development of the cartilage of the wings is fully completed. Usually the ears are not large, but simply deformed. In this case an incision is made in the back of the ear and through this incision the cartilage skeleton of the ear is formed. The ear flap is then fixed by absorbable sutures to the periosteum of the mastoid process.

Indications

Otoplasty is recommended to be performed at an early age to avoid unpleasant effects on the psychology of children.

Extremely common, of course, is the correction of floppy ears in adult men or women, correcting an aesthetic “handicap” and significantly improving the appearance of the person. Otoplasty or ear surgery aims to return the ear flaps to their normal position.

Another case of Otoplasty is ear flap aplasia (agenesis of the ear), in which there is a complete or partial absence of an ear flap. Also very common is the disorder of the “bifid lobe”, which occurs mainly in women who, by wearing heavy earrings, have created a separation in the lower part of the ear lobe. This correction is done under local anesthesia and has excellent results.

Results

The results of Otoplasty are permanent, changing the image of the patient. The actions taken during the surgery are not affected by the growth of the ear flap as the patient grows.

The patient can return home the same day after surgery without any problems, as long as the surgery is performed under local anesthesia.

Postoperative Course

Immediately after the Otoplasty, a pressure bandage is placed on the ears and around the head and remains in place for 3 days. The first change is made on the 3rd day when the bandage is removed and the patient can be bathed with an antiseptic product. Pain is a subjective feeling and, in some people, it is more intense, while others do not feel it at all postoperatively. In all cases, however, it is bearable and is treated with common painkillers, but not with aspirin, which should be avoided. The external sutures (intradermal suture) are removed on the 15th day and it is recommended to use an elastic bandage – ribbon during sleep to avoid possible injury for about a month.

There are no scars and marks, the patient can even return to work the next day and the result is permanent.

Complications

Complications of Otoplasty are rare in the hands of experienced and skilled plastic surgeons. Hematoma in the flap area and inflammation if they occur should be treated promptly with drainage and oral antibiotics.

At the Cosmetic Derma Medicine Medical Group‘s specialized Plastic Surgery Clinic, Otoplasty is a routine procedure for plastic surgeons and local anesthesia is used in most cases, and complications are practically zero.
