Laser hair removal makes your dream come true! Imagine how much easier your life would be without the unwanted hair. Forget waxing, shaving, depilatory creams and epilation.
Cosmetic Derma Medicine, as a specialized Dermatology and Plastic Surgery clinic offers the entire range of modern laser treatments, the most popular of which is laser hair removal.
We were the first to bring and use the Candella GentleLase and Candella GentleLase PRO hair removal systems, the latest evolution in Alexandrite laser technology, for faster, more efficient and permanent hair removal results.
The most effective hair removal system is the Alexandrite laser system which uses a wavelength of 755 nm. The Diode laser system operates at a wavelength of 805 nm, but it targets darker hair (used on darker skin types), compared to the Alexandrite system. The ND-YAG laser hair removal emits at 1064 nm and is mostly applied on IV and V phototypes, while its effect on white skin types is similar with the one of the Alexandrite laser system. This laser system is also used on vascular lesions.
The term Alexandrite laser hair removal refers to a number of devices that belong to different technological “generations” and are manufactured by different companies. The most renowned companies are: Candela, laser Alexandrite, Cynosure apogee, laser Alexandrite Deka, laser Alexandrite Arion etc. The Soprano laser is a diode laser.
The most up-to-date laser hair removal system is Candella GentleLase PRO as it is the fastest, most effective and most widely used laser in Greece and abroad.
Laser hair removal is usually performed for aesthetic purposes. However, it can also be imposed by medical reasons.Shaving, waxing and epilation, often cause folliculitis (pimples). In such cases, laser treatment is necessary to prevent the forming of permanent scars in the areas of application. Moreover, laser hair removal is the only solution if you have spider veins on your legs or if waxing and depilatory creams irritate your skin. It is the only treatment that guarantees permanent results in case of hypertrichosis or hirsutism caused by hormonal disorders. Other medical reasons that impose laser hair removal include irritations and dermatitis caused by waxing and depilatory creams. Laser treatment is also recommended when other methods of hair removal have caused hair to be trapped inside the skin, causing scars, particularly on the legs. If you have a history of papillomas or condylomas, laser is the only appropriate method for hair removal, to prevent these lesions from multiplying and spreading. Patients with a history of pilonidal cyst must undergo laser treatment, given that this condition is caused by hair that is trapped in the intergluteal cleft.
The new Candela GentleLase PRO hair removal system offers more options and variable pulse duration. Laser hair removal is safer even during the summer months and on slightly tanned skins.
Laser prevails over the other methods of hair removal, because it is the only scientifically acceptable method of hair reduction. Shaving and waxing often cause irritations, folliculitis, increase in hair growth, deterioration of spider veins and skin laxity. The aforementioned side effects do not appear when laser hair removal is applied.
Depilatory creams cause dermatitis and have no substantial effect, compared to the laser hair removal.
Photolysis (Intense Pulsed Light or IPL) is wrongly and misleadingly associated with “laser hair removal”, because it has nothing to do with the medical application and the outcomes obtained from the actual laser hair removal.
More than 20 to 30 photolysis sessions are required in order to have an observable result!
Laser hair removal is the only medical method that removes unwanted hair and can only be performed by specially trained and licensed doctors.
Today laser hair removal is carried out in stable forms of psoriasis and vitiligo with the latest generation lasers and without adverse reactions. Relative contraindications include pregnancy and breast feeding, while most gynecologists allow laser hair removal during pregnancy and breast feeding, because is doesn’t entail any risks for the fetus and the baby, respectively.
Adverse reactions from laser hair removal appear when the patient doesn’t comply with the doctor’s instructions or when the laser is not handled by an experienced dermatologist, or when it is not performed under his/her supervision. These include hypopigmentation or hyperpigmentation, which resolve with time. After laser hair removal temporary erythema and follicular edema may appear on the treated area that will subside after a couple of hours.
The laser used for hair removal is a light that has no effect on those skin structures that do not contain melanin, such as the lymph nodes and the mammary gland (breast).
Laser hair removal can be applied on every area where hair grows, such as:
Laser hair removal on face (upper lip, cheeks, chin, cheekbones, sideburns, eyebrows)
Laser hair removal on hands (arms, forearms)
Laser hair removal on armpits
Laser hair removal on the bikini area
Laser hair removal on legs (calves, thighs)
Other areas, such as chest, lower back (waist), abdomen, buttocks, etc
Laser Nd Yag is ideal for dark skin tones (phototype) as well as tanned skins during summer. It is also preferred in persistent hair growth that mostly grows on hormonally-dependent areas, such as the chin. The difference between Laser Nd Yag and laser Alexandrite is their technical characteristics.
For instance, the Laser Nd Yag has a longer pulse (1064 nm) which means that it burns the root of the hair, but doesn’t directly destroy the hair shaft, as Alexandrite does. Studies have shown that hair removal with laser Nd Yag is effective and safe.
Are there any other options for dark phototypes? As happens in the case of Nd Yag laser, the Laser Diode is also indicated for tanned skins. We use it to remove hair during the summer months. Laser diode has different technical characteristics from the Alexandrite laser and the Nd Yag.
The Diode laser uses the 808 nm wavelength which is transmitted to melanin pigments. However, due to the small wavelength, the absorption by hair melanin is inferior to the one of Alexandrite laser. Studies have shown that hair removal with laser diode is safe.
Our clinic has the most up-to-date technology of the Alexandrite lasers, the Candela GlentleLase PRO, the ND-Yag Laser Candela, and the Diode Laser. Thus, we are able to treat all phototypes and hair colors, and achieve the best possible results. The results of laser hair removal are permanent and impressive.
Laser hair removal leads to significant reduction of hair growth even from the first session and as time goes by, the hair get softer, lighter and smoother. The results vary, depending on the type of the laser used (Alexandrite lasers have the best results), the color and quality of the hair, the color of the skin, the experience of the operator and the supervising doctor, the laser intensity applied on each session, and the duration of the pulse.
Moreover, the results also depend on the area treated, and on the existence or non-existence of hormonal disorders. The areas that show the best results on laser hair removal are the bikini, the armpits and legs, while the face may require more sessions. The result of permanent hair removal with laser is achieved faster in women compared to men, because women have less circulating androgens in their blood.

FAQ’s on laser hair removal
However, dark skins and light brown hair can be effectively treated with the Candela GentleLase. There are no long-term adverse reactions from laser treatment when this is performed under the supervision of specialized dermatologists or plastic surgeons.
Therefore a number of laser sessions will be required for all hair to reach the anagen phase. In general, it requires no more than 4 to 7 treatments, repeated every 1.5 to 2 months. At least 1 month after the laser treatment the area will be free of hair.
