Blepharoplasty is the operation that can revive your youthful look and reverse the signs of aging.
Blepharoplasty is a minimally invasive solution, one of the most popular and safe procedures of cosmetic surgery today.
If your eyes look tired, if you have wrinkles, drooping eyelids or under-eye bags, then blepharoplasty is the right solution for you.
The skin looses its elasticity and the eyelid fat loosens, which leads to upper eyelid skin redundancy, wrinkles and under-eye bags. The principal indications for blepharoplasty are the excess skin of the orbito-palpebral area (i.e. upper eyelid sagging and ptosis), and lipoptosis (commonly known as “under-eye bags”) caused by the protruding fat of the lower eyelid that gives the appearance of puffy eyes.
The principal cause for tired looking eyes is natural aging. However, some hereditary and life style factors may lead to blepharoplasty much sooner. Blepharoplasty may give the final solution to all these problems with absolute safety.
If tired-looking eyes are due to the modern way of life, stress, lack of sleep or to hereditary causes or endocrinopathies such as thyroid problems, then blepharoplasty may be done much sooner, from the age of 20.
While wrinkles around the eyes can be easily treated with botulinum toxin injections (Botox®, Dysport®), the sagging skin of the upper eyelid and the excessive fat of the lower eyelid may be addressed alone or together only with blepharoplasty.
The specialized plastic surgeons of Cosmetic Derma Medicine will suggest the proper treatment, which is customized to each patient’s needs. In Cosmetic Derma Medicine blepharoplasty procedures are always performed under local anesthesia, without sedation, to ensure fast recovery and the immediate return to normal activities.
We perform upper eyelid blepharoplasty (removal of excess skin from the upper eyelid, lower eyelid blepharoplasty (removal of fat or skin from the lower eyelid) or a combination of the two (upper and lower blepharoplasty).
The procedure is minimally invasive, it is performed in our clinic under local anesthesia with xyloxaine 1% and adrenaline 1:200000 solution, it is completed within one session and requires no hospitalization. It lasts about one and a half hour; the patient is conscious throughout the procedure and may immediately return home after the procedure. Patients may return to their activities and work immediately after blepharoplasty and the results are impressive and visible from the very first days. The tired and old looking eyes acquire a youthful and refreshed look.
Any small edema (swelling) or slight bruising that might appear on the area will not affect the aesthetic result and will subside within the next 24 hours without the need of medication, only with the application of cold compresses. Patients are advised to apply cold compresses at home for the first 2 days and will be re-examined the following day and on the 5th day after surgery to remove the thin sutures.
There is no postoperative pain, only a sensation of pressure (tightness) on the eyelids which will subside within the first hours after the procedure.
This method enables us to achieve a small ablation of the excess skin of the upper and lower eyelid, the recession of the sagging parts, and the visible tightening of the skin at the upper or lower eyelid. No skin burn or necrosis is involved, only a minor irritation that subsides within the next days. Because of its non invasive character it only requires 2-3 sessions to achieve the final, observable result. It is not recommended in cases where there is too much excess skin and fat on the lower eyelid. In those cases the final solution will be given by the traditional blepharoplasty.
For better aesthetic results, blepharoplasty may be combined with other treatments such as:
Face rejuvenation with Fractional CO2 laser
Wrinkle treatment with botulinum toxin injections (Botox, Dysport)
as well as other major plastic surgery procedures (face lift, brow lift).
